 BREAST AUGUMENTATION
HOW WOULD THE INITIAL LOOK AND FEEL BE?

A day or two after surgery, you should be back to normal. Within several days, your dressings may also be changed or removed. You may be instructed to wear a support bra. Post surgery your plastic surgeon will probably permit you to shower between three and seven days. Stitches will be removed in about a week.

Some discoloration and swelling will occur initially, but this will disappear quickly. Most residual swelling will resolve within a month. The surgeon will advice you regarding breast massage, which in many cases, will delay or prevent the onset of capsule formation.

WHEN CAN MY NORMAL ACTIVITIES BE RESUMED?

Post breast augmentation surgery, it is often possible to resume work within just a couple of weeks, depending on your job. Vigorous activities, especially arm movement, may be restricted for two to three weeks.

Any sexual activity should abstained from for a minimum of one week. After that, care must be taken to be extremely gentle with your breasts for at least the next month.

HOW BREAST AUGMENTATION IS PERFORMED

Your plastic surgeon in consultation with you will determine your appropriate breast size, the location of incisions, and whether the implants will be placed on top of or underneath the chest muscle on individual factors and personal preferences.

WHAT TYPE OF IMPLANTS WILL BE USED?

Essentially implants are of two types: silicone and saline. Despite all the hype, silicone implants are still most commonly used all over the world. In fact even in the U.S., a limited license has been given for the use of silicone implants. The placement of the implant is in a pocket either directly behind the breast tissue (right) or underneath the pectoral muscle which is located between the breast tissue and chest wall.

UNDERSTANDING RISKs

Year after year, multitudes of women undergo successful breast augmentation surgery.

However one should be aware of both the benefits and risks when considering surgery. Some of the risks of this procedure are:

  • Anesthesia related
  • Blood accumulation which may need to be drained
  • Infection (rare)
  • Capsule formation (variation of degrees), if severe may need removal or replacement
  • Implant leakage or failure
  • Interference with mammograms
RESULTS OF BREAST AUGMENTATION

Your breasts will be fuller and their shape enhanced as a result of breast augmentation. Wearing certain styles of clothing will be easier. Like many women who have had breast augmentation, you may have a boost in self-confidence.

HOW LONG WILL THE RESULTS LAST?

Except in the event of implant deflation requiring surgical replacement with a new implant, the results of your breast augmentation surgery will be long-lasting. However, natural factors like gravity and aging will eventually affect the size and shape of virtually every woman’s breasts. If, over a certain period, you become dissatisfied with the appearance of your breasts, you may choose to undergo a breast ”lifting” to restore their more youthful contour.
