Henry Stevens recuperating after his surgery
|
What do a polo umpire from Surrey and an engineer from Staffordshire have in common? Both received medical care at the Wockhardt Hospital in Mulund within the last four weeks.
Though they are not the first Europeans to undergo treatment in India, they are among the few who have made a conscious decision to seek treatment here. "I could have gone to France or somewhere else in Europe," said Lee Marshall, an electrical engineer, who is currently recovering from a knee surgery. But, an internet search revealed Wockhardt had a tie-up with the Harvard Medical School, and that helped him take a decision. Now, he is ready to embark on a tour of Rajasthan before returning to Britain.
Henry Stevens also opted to seek medical care in India. A polo umpire and horse trainer, he had such severe pain in his right hip that he was unable to mount a horse. UK's National Health Service (NHS) told him he would have to wait for 18 months for a "hip resurfacing" operation. The costs for private treatment were about £10,000. Now, he is on his way to a recovery after Dr Kushal Malhan operated on him.
Recognising the huge potential in medical tourism, the Centre is gearing up to set up a National Accreditation Health Board to enable hospitals obtain quality certification according to Indian standards.

"There are about 30 hospitals in Mumbai, Bangalore, Hyderabad and Kolkata, which can meet international standards," said Vishal Bali, vice-president of the Wockhardt group of hospitals and a member of the Confederation of Indian Industry (CII) panel on healthcare tourism. He said the number of patients coming to India from Europe and the Americas for treatment would be around 600 each year.
But, many also come for cosmetic surgery or for ayurvedic therapies, he added.
