Wockhardt launches four new Hospitals at Mulund complex

With Dr. S Narayani, Head of Pathology, at the Pathology laboratory.

With Dr. Bipin Daxini, Cardiologist, at the Cardiology lab.

A significant milestone merits an occasion to celebrate. And what better way to commemorate the opening of Wockhardt's four new super - speciality hospitals at Mulund, Mumbai, than the visit of the Harvard Medical School Dean, Dr. Joseph Boyd Martin, who inaugurated the hospitals.

It was February 8 and citizens of Mulund woke up to the birth of four hospitals in their midst. Wockhardt's new hospitals for Brain & Spine, Bone & Joint, Eye, and Minimal Access Surgery have been eagerly awaited in this area of Mumbai and will cater to more than 45 lakh residents in the city and adjoining districts.

Following the opening of the first hospital, the Wockhardt Heart Hospital, in Mulund, in July last year, the recent expansion of the hospital complex is an indicator of the association between Wockhardt and Harvard Medical International (HMI) taking deeper root.

The hospitals have been conceptualised and developed as an integrated multi-disciplinary approach to disease management.

Together with our Chairman, invited doctors and guests, Wockhardians joined members from HMI as the Dean cut the ribbon to inaugurate the hospitals. The Dean took a tour of the complex and met various department heads, doctors, medical and para-medical staff.

Dr. Joseph Martin then addressed a large gathering of physicians from the suburbs who had gathered at the venue, to hear the dean of the world's most prestigious medical institution.

Dr. Martin was all praise for the patient-friendly care he saw at the hospital and the efficient use of modern technology, starting with the card and barcode for in-patients and the latest diagnostic equipment. "Through each of the components, one can see the technology of the future, in a way I have not seen in any of our hospitals in Boston," he said.

Our Chairman Habil Khorakiwala also supplemented Dr. Martin's observation in his address to the doctors, "With the patient at the centre of our philosophy and efforts at Wockhardt Hospitals, we bring contemporary and current clinical practice and infrastructure, backed by a dedicated team of consultants and specialists."

Khorakiwala highlighted some unique features of the new hospitals. Wockhardt is the first medical institution to establish a separate hospital specialising in minimal access procedures (popularly called keyhole surgeries) to minimise surgical trauma, pain and blood loss. Within each hospital, speciality clinics have been set up for specific treatment of various medical disorders. For example, the bone & joint hospital has speciality clinics for sports medicine, trauma, arthritis and osteoporosis. Similarly, the brain & spine hospital has speciality clinics for stroke, memory disorder, epilepsy and headache. A multi-disciplinary diabetic clinic has also been established to provide comprehensive diabetic management programmes.

The doctors also got to hear from senior members of Wockhardt and HMI, who had worked closely to bring the new hospitals to fruition.

Dr. Robert Crone, President & CEO of HMI, said "The collaboration between Wockhardt and HMI would see greater things in the future and make a distinctive difference in the delivery of patient care in India."

Recognising that obsolescence was high in healthcare, Anil Kamath, Wockhardt's Senior Vice-President - Business Development, commended HMI for bringing to India an integrated programme for educating and training doctors as well as paramedical and nursing fraternity.

Dr. Mehul Mehta, Vice-President and a key member of the HMI team, said that what had developed out of the joint efforts was a system of healthcare delivery that was team-based, patient-centric and of the highest quality.

HMl's Director of Health Systems, Dr. Harvey Makadon, pointed out that the information technology system at the hospital was not only state-of-the-art but when fully implemented would be amongst the most modern in the world.
