Dr. Robert Crone President & CEO - HMI, outlines the selection criteria for the awards. |
Doctors are angels on earth... the restorers of our health... the caretakers of our well-being.
As an honour to the work of doctors in our country and a common vision to catalyse medical excellence, Wockhardt and Harvard Medical International (HMI), US, came together to institute lifetime achievement awards for outstanding Indian doctors.
15 February 2003, was the chosen day for the Wockhardt Medical Excellence Awards to be unveiled as an acknowledgement of the ingenuity, innovation and compassionate delivery of care that the medical profession stands for.
An occasion of this stature was made more historic with the presence of a very special chief guest and a leading international figure in the medical world - the Dean of Harvard Medical School, Dr. Joseph Boyd Martin. It was the first time ever that a dean of the School had visited India.
The setting for the Awards celebration couldn't be more perfect, as five of India's outstanding doctors received honours from Wockhardt and Harvard for their lifetime contribution to medicine. It was a cool balmy Saturday evening and all roads led to the venue, the Jamshed Bhabha Auditorium, at NCPA, Mumbai. Little wonder that the event witnessed a 'houseful' attendance of the city's leading doctors, industry leaders, our guests from Harvard and their spouses. Wockhardians from Sales & Marketing were the perfect hosts, taking care of each guest, as they ushered them into the auditorium. Large display panels on the stage colourfully illustrated the Wockhardt - Harvard association and the common bond that runs through these two healthcare institutions.
Soon, the lights dimmed and the evening began with a six-minute film taking the audience on a fascinating journey on the essence of Wockhardt.
The graceful former Miss India Manpreet Brar made her entry as compere of the show and welcomed everyone to an evening of celebration and festivity.
First to be invited on stage was Dr. Robert Crone, President & CEO, HMI, who shared with the audience the process by which the awards would be administered and the academic association each awardee would get in addition to the coveted trophy.
While Wockhardt would provide necessary grants and logistics support, HMI would oversee an unbiased and transparent selection process; key criteria being excellence in clinical practice, research and teaching.
Our Chairman Habil Khorakiwala was next to address the audience. He said that award was a synergy of purpose and commitment between two organisations, who though miles apart, had joined hands to pay tribute to those who find solutions for their patients in the laboratory of life. He stressed that while the award would be a coveted honour for the recipient doctor, the real prize would always be their work.
The 'Wockhardt Medical Excellence Award' trophy was unveiled on the stage as a life-sized replica of the trophy amidst fireworks and a shower of glitter.
The Dean along with our Chairman presented the golden trophies and certificates to the five recipients - Dr. S Padmavati (in Cardiology), Dr. Noshir Wadia (in Neurology), Dr. Prafulla Desai (in Oncology), Dr. N Gopinath (in Cardiac Surgery), and Dr. Sam G P Moses in (Diabetology).
The recipients were introduced by renowned doctors in their respective fields as the large screen featured their achievements.
