Rheumatic heart disease, which affects the valves of the heart, damaging the heart muscle and eventually leading to heart failure, has its highest prevalence in India. An associated problem for more than 70% of the patients who have mitral valve disease is a trial fibrillation, which is the most common cause of mortality for this group of patients.
Dr. Joachim Laas, renowned Cardiovascular Surgeon from the Centre for Cardiovascular Diseases, Bad Bevensen, Germany, conducted a live workshop in June at Wockhardt Heart Hospital, Mumbai. Joining him in the workshop were our hospital's cardiothoracic and vascular surgeons Dr. Kaushal Pandey and Dr. Shantesh Kaushik. The surgery was conducted with the technique of irrigated radio frequency modified maze procedure, which is performed to treat a trial fibrillation along with an open heart surgery for valve replacement. This unique surgery was performed for the first time in the city.

"Patients with rheumatic heart disease generally have economic difficulties and it is important that a trial fibrillation is corrected along With valve replacement surgery," Dr. Laas says.
In India, more than 15,000 mitral valve replacement surgeries are performed each year and about 80% of them have a trial fibrillation as an associated complication. A trial fibrillation is an abnormal rhythm of the heart caused by disturbed electrical discharges. It causes the heart to beat too fast. Symptoms include dizziness, fainting, weakness, chest pain and shortness of breath. Complications include heart failure and stroke.
"At present, most patients with rheumatic mitral valve disease undergo valve replacement with nothing being done for a trial fibrillation. This is a unique step for heart surgery in Mumbai," says Dr. Kaushik. Dr. Pandey adds, "This kind of surgery is extremely advantageous and offers a perfect solution to patients. With this advancement, patients will be able to live a better quality of life."
