  INTRODUCTION & BENEFITS

After a surgery, hospital stay often becomes a tedious task for the patient and his visitors. Not only does it take the patient time to adjust to his new surroundings, it is often noted as a discomfort. Every surgery has its own healing time and requires the patient to rest adequately before he can be sent home. However, there are some surgeries where the patient is operated and sent home that very same day!

Wockhardt Hospitals (A Network Hospital of Fortis) is proud to introduce Short Stay Surgery

It is important to mention that Short Stay Surgery is no different from other surgeries. All patients need some degree of post-operative specialised nursing care necessitating post-op observation.

Surgical patients are required to come early in the morning and after the surgery is over and the post-operative observation is uneventful, the patient is discharged for home the very same day.

In case of outpatient surgery, the patient usually has minor surgical ailment and operated either in the minor OT or under local/regional anaesthesia, and sent back home immediately/in half an hour.

Short Stay Surgery has been defined by the Royal College of Surgeons as when the surgical day case patient is admitted for investigation or operation on a planned non-resident basis and who nonetheless requires facilities for recovery.

This definition excludes upper and lower GI endoscopies, outpatient procedures such as flexible cystoscopy, and minor superficial surgery under local anaesthetic, none of which require full day case facilities for recovery. Currently the Short Stay Surgery has a specialized dedicated team, functioning only at Cunningham Road, Bangalore.

  Pre-operative Preparation

Before we begin the Short Stay Surgery, the patient will have been provided with explanations of what the surgery involves and a list of instructions. On the morning of the operation, the patient should arrive early while the nursing staff will check their preoperative medical questionnaire, noting any significant abnormalities. Patients are weighed and their vital signs recorded. The expected routing and length of stay are explained again to the patient and escort, together with advice concerning postoperative pain and recovery. The operating surgeon will then explain the nature of the surgery to be carried out and witness the patients' signature on the operation consent form and countersign this form. It is preferable that the patient carries out this procedure on the day of the operation, rather than in the outpatient clinic, to refresh the patients mind concerning the details of the operative procedure.

At this stage, the patient is seen by an anesthetist and the results of any preoperative investigations checked. Most patients will not receive pre-medication, on the grounds that it is unnecessary, may prolong recovery time and put patients at risk after their discharge from the hospital. Newer, short-acting pre-anesthetic agents have now enabled patients to have their anxiety reduced while not delaying postoperative recovery. A copy of this data, together with advice about possible complications and when to return to work will be given to the patient and will be explained as well.

Considering the busy lives we all lead, Short Stay Surgery has now come to be an accepted modality of treatment for most surgical patients. Moreover, it has multiple advantages to all the stakeholders as well as the patients, besides being an economically better option. Opt for the Short Stay Surgery today!
